Solid start against Rondebosch CC for Third XI…

The Ottoman Third XI got there season off to a solid start, while still knowing that here is a lot to work on. Match fitness will solve many of the issues, but still 9 points in the first game constitutes a decent start and provides a platform from which to build.

Day 1 got off to a cracking start, Captain Ebrahim Frank winning the toss and electing to field first. Wickets started falling as soon as the second over, but a few dropped catches meant that Rondebosch CC could put a partnership together in the middle over’s.

An outstanding bowling performance by Goosain Parker taking 4/26 and being well backed up by Zahid Kajee, 2/17, restricted Rondebosch to 130 all out.

After a shaky start, losing a Nadeem Marcus in the 2nd over, Ismail and Rayyaan Adams put together a very good 84 run partnership, which was immediately followed up by a 50 run partnership between the skipper and Ismail.

A good knock by Ismail Adams of 64 runs set up a 51 run first innings lead and the boys were confident of returning on day 2 to wrap up a victory.

On day 2, while our plans were to wrap the game up, Rondebosch had other plans. Showing good grit and determination they made our bowlers fight for every wicket.

Solid bowling performances by W. Mukaddam, 3/17, Z. Kajee, 2/42, and E. Frank 3/32, meant that RCC was bowled out for 180, leaving us a target of 135 in 30 over’s. A very gettable total.

Unfortunately the rustiness kicked in and the top order failed to impress spectators or the scorers. This collapse meant that the middle order needed to consolidate and that pretty much meant that the run chase was halted and that a draw was the most likely result. A good partnership by I. Parker, 27, and W. Mukaddam, 40, and a fighting 5 over innings by Mr. Bandekar meant that the draw was secured.

Many positives came from the game and it is safe to assume that come the end of the season, this team WILL be fighting for league honours…
